Thank you majique for these tips, especially this one!

Tips for household - If you drop something onto parquetry flooring and it dents the wood, get a cloth a place over it, get your steam iron and fill it with water and on the highest steam setting do shots of steam above the cloth. This should lift the bruised wood back more into its original position - must be done within 24 hours of damage.

Hi, been in so many forums I lost track of the tips one. Violet Flame and whispering breeze I am happy to be able to share - also eucalyptus oil removes most paint spots of windows tiles and walls where builders have left there marks.

If you have overspiced a dish add yoghurt to reduce the excess and bring it back to a more acceptable level.
If you put too much salt into a recipe eg casserole etc when it is cooking peel several poatoes and cut then in half and cook along with the other ingredients. remove prior to serving.

A tip for your salt and pepper shakers

Postby Wise Owl » Thu Jan 15, 2004 12:36 pm

If your salt or pepper shakers keep clogging up, add a few
grains of uncooked rice to them. The rice will absorb the
moisture that causes the salt and pepper to clump. Dried
peas will work just the same. If you have shakers that aren't
see-through, having the peas or rice in the shakers will
alert you when it's getting near the time to refill. They
will start to rattle......

Oven baking

Postby Wise Owl » Sun Jan 25, 2004 11:40 pm

If you love the taste of "brick-oven" cooked pizzas, you can get the same effect easily. Go to a home improvement store and buy enough unglazed ceramic tiles to line the bottom of your oven. Cook your pizzas right on top of the tiles. No need to remove the tiles if you don't want, they will help your oven distribute heat more evenly when using it. To clean the tiles, just rinse with hot water, no soap...

fresher popcorn

Postby Wise Owl » Sun Jan 25, 2004 11:40 pm

Whether you use microwave popcorn or regular popcorn, more kernels will pop if your popcorn is fresh. Store the kernels or the packages in an airtight container in your fridge...

Fresher frozen foods

Postby Wise Owl » Sun Jan 25, 2004 11:46 pm

If you like freezing leftovers and want to keep them as
fresh as possible while frozen, get as much of the air
out of the bag as you can by using a zippered plastic bag
and after putting your food inside, squeeze as much air out
as possible, zip closed with enough room to insert a straw
into the bag. Suck the excess air out through the straw and
zip closed. Air is what causes food to lose its freshness
quickly and this tip helps preserve the food longer in the
freezer....

Handy Tips - baking

Postby Wise Owl » Tue Jan 27, 2004 11:47 am

If your oven racks are really grimmy after all that holiday baking, place them in a heavy-duty trash bag,add half cup of ammonia, close the bag tightly and let stand overnight.
Open the bag, stand away from it and allow the fumes to hit the air for a few minutes before taking the racks out. Then wash and thoroughly rinse them. Before doing this, check your manual to be certain this won't damage them.

Handy Tips - fridge, freezer, and cabinets

Postby Wise Owl » Tue Jan 27, 2004 11:48 am

When it comes to storing thins in your refrigerator, think square! You'll gain more room in less space with square and rectangular storage containers. Round containers waste more room, in the fridge, freezer and cabinets.

Covering your Cake

To cover a cake with foil or plastic wrap without ruining the frosting or topping, insert toothpicks at strategic points, top each with a miniature marshmallow ( large will do) and wrap. The wrapping will not stick to the frosting.

Vinegar

To clean hard water build-up in appliances like a steamer, or a drip coffee pot, use vinegar and water. Run this combination through it's cycle in each appliance at least two or three times. Then run the cycle with clean water to remove any vinegar residue. The ratio of water to vinegar is about 50/50, depending on how much you want to use.

Tip for Peeling garlic

Place the clove on a work surface and cover with the side of a large chef's knife. Press down firmly but carefully on the side of the knife to crush the clove slightly. The dry skin will slip off easily.

Hello everyone - this is a lovely thread.. hehe

Just a little tip with tofu - its great for first aid! If you burn yourself in the kitchen, quickly slap on some fresh tofu on the affected area and it will immediately take away the heat and pain!

Versatile stuff hey? ;)

With love,

If your hands smell of onions after chopping them wash them in cold water with some pure lemon juice.

If you have a frozen gateaux, never wait until it's fully defrosted to slice it as it goes all squishy. Just wait until it's thawed out halfway and slice it then and you will get really neat unsquished slices of gateaux.

If you're ever making a Shephards pie and unexpected visitors turn up and need feeding, add a can of baked beans to the meat to make it go just that little bit further.

If you need to slice meat really finely, place it in the freezer until firm it slices easier that way.

To remove onion smells from your hands place a little table salt and liquid soap in the palm of your hand, add a little water and scrub your hands all over. Not only does this get rid of your onion smell but it makes your hands super smooth (don't forget to moisturize afterward though).

Also with Garlic, the more finely you chop it the stronger the flavour will be.

If you've accidentally tasted some chilli that's a little too hot, drink some milk or a have a spoonful of yogurt. The fats in the yogurt / milk break down the caspicum oil. NEVER drink water, it just spreads the oil around your mouth more.

Hope they're useful :)
