Fish Oil for Kids with challenging behaviours

Postby Citrine » Sat Nov 27, 2010 7:20 pm

Hi everyone,

I just popped in to post this because I think anyone with a child with challenging behaviours should read this before thinking about medicating their children with Ritalin, Concerta etc. I was close to this point with my 11 year, have been for a lot of years, but my belief against medications unless it got to a very extreme point (we were very close on that one) made it necessary.

My youngest had been challenging from 6 months of age, now 11, I was living with daily mood swings that were really awful, swearing, whinging, whining, being verbally abused when he didint get his own way, having things thrown at me, having to physically drag him to have a shower as he would refuse point blank, it was exhausting and I was also very worried how I was going to manage with him once he got to say 13 or 14 and was stronger and bigger than me.

He would also have night terrors and every night would scream out in his sleep at someone so his sleep was broken.

I had taken him to a natropath about 3 years ago for the night terrors and she did sort them out very quickly and was ready to work on his other behaviours, but my son would not open up to her so she was unable to get to the root of the problem and then he also refused to go back to her and refused any form of naturopathic medicine.

About 2 weeks ago I bought some fish oil tablets for myself they are Omega 3 1000mg Fish oil. He saw me taking them one evening and asked me what they were and what they do for you. So I told him that they were very good for skin (he has excema from time to time) and he asked for one. Then again the following night and ocassionally of a morning. I dont make a big issue of it, and it keeps it as his decision and he reminds me every night to give him a tablet.

I cannot believe the change in him, there is a very different calm energy about him now he is absolutely beautiful to be around. Family and friends have noticed his huge change too. He has a broken foot atm is at week 3 of a 5 week stint in plaster and should be climbing the walls and whining and nagging even more (he threw a drink at me day 1 of being in plaster before he started taking the fish oil tablets) but he has been fantastic. Night terrors have also gone, they used to wake me up every night and I didnt care about the waking up part but felt so bad he was having them. When I went to look at a car to buy I couldnt remember half the stuff the guy told me, my son absorbed the lot!

I had tried him on kiddie fish oil squirts about a year ago but they had no real effect on him. I guess the potency wasnt there to be effective, perhaps on toddlers in this situation would work well maybe? My son has even said he feels heaps better in himself, doesnt feel frustrated or angry anymore.

So I hope this helps anyone out there in a similiar situation, I wish I had found this years ago, but so so grateful we have the solution now and he is feeling 1000% better.

I remember my mom giving all of us kids codliver oil ..... I'd send my sister threw the line twice as she liked the taste and mom only counted the number of spoons!

I read somewhere that Adelaide Uni did a trial on this, so I must try and find the details. I do believe they proved it worked for children with autism.

Glad it's helping your dear one, Citrine

You had it worked out Uni ducking the cod Liveroil lol. Nowadays no one has to taste it thank goodness all nicely packaged in a capsule! My Dad had an obsession with Castor oil... omg cant imagine what the health benefits of that are... except for none lol.

Thank you Sharron for having a look that would be awesome to read how the trials with fish oil and Autism went. Its still working here so well, family members and friends commenting how much calmer and more confident my youngest is when they saw him over Christmas.

citine I think my sister was a little nutty to actually like the taste of that stuff. Just the smell was enough to make me hide. I do wonder how many times my sister went in the line.

It was suppose to keep us heathy but anything that smelled that bad .... and even when I was in my teens and there were pills I just couldn't do it! lol

We've come a long way!

LOL Uni does she love her seafood today or have an aversion to it? The tablets are so much better today, even a few years back used to repeat awfully and was no way could have a coffee 3 hours after them lol. The sceptics are saying that how the oil is treated now to be more pleasant doesnt have the benefits, but I have seen the results and they do work really well :D Has restored this household to a much happier home :danc:

Citrine I am not sure if she goes out of her way to have seafood/fish I do know that she will eat it.
I use to like shrimp and the only time I would eat fish was if my adopted grandpa removed all the bones for me .... maybe I have an aversion to it! Then again I have food issues like I can eat meat loaf but not tourtiere. I also ate apples for most of my life and then found out I was allergic. lol

I am glad that they have improved the tablets. This maybe the answer to some behaviours and bring peace and happieness to more homes.

Thanks for the link Shazza

Thanks Shazza for the Link! I look forward to following the trials, but know it has helped my son in lots of areas, totally different boy now. Think it would be of benefit to a lot of adults too.

I hope the trials get all the proper publicity they deserve, it would be great to see paedatricians and doctors handing out fish oil tablets rather than ritalin as a first step.

What is tourtiere Uni? What kind of allergy do you get to apples? That would be a bummer no apple pie!

Wow Citrine... I now know this is a sign. I have been not feeling well for awhile. I know that I am missing vital vitamins and possibly my iron is low. I am a vegetarian so making sure I am eating properly can be a challenge at times. I have been getting guidance about fish oil over and over again. Being a veggie though I was conflicted. I am so glad that it is helping your son and you see a positive change. It's hard I know,,,my oldest son was misdiagnosed a few years ago with ADD. I was pressured over and over again by the specialist to go on Ritalin. I finally relented but all it did was mess him up more. He couldn't sleep and he lost his appetite...it wasn't a positive experience. Eventually I told him to stop taking them and he was much happier for it. Since then he was re-tested and was diagnosed with a learning disability. All that stress for nothing but a lesson learned. I am very pleased for you :D

Dear Citrine,

You may want to check out this book called Diet Wise by Dr Keith Scott-Mumby. If I could have it my way, I'd be buying this book for everyone on this planet!
Good luck and may your son be better and better.
